al-Hihira is the the day which marks the beginning of a new Hijri year.It also been called as "Muharram".Hijira is an Arabic transliteration, meaning "migration", referring to the migration of Muslims from Mecca to Medina led by the Islamic prophet Muhammad in 622.In order to commemorate this historical event, the second Islamic Caliph Umar regarded this year as the beginning of hijir year.
The Hijri calendar regards 12 months as a year, with 30 days in odd months and 29 days in even months. The average annual number is only 354 days, which is 10 to 11 days less than the Gregorian calendar year.
